This is the 1st in a series of 3 videos featuring part of a lecture by Alan Watts and animated by Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame.
In this video Alan Watts discusses whether humans are the Earth’s fruit the same way apples are the fruit of the apple tree. Because an apple’s existence relies on an evolutionary survival mechanism providing a benefit to the apple tree, could we human “fruit” have a survival benefit towards the universe “plant”?
“Look, here is a tree in the garden and every summer is produces apples, and we call it an apple tree because the tree “apples.” That’s what it does. Alright, now here is a solar system inside a galaxy, and one of the peculiarities of this solar system is that at least on the planet earth, the thing peoples! In just the same way that an apple tree apples!”
